This sub is quite the addition to my system which consists of 2 AR-4x's a Technics SA-AX540 receiver, and a Technics SL-PD5 CD player. I was looking for a subwoofer with tremendous power and one that was a good bang for the buck. I was originally looking at Acoustic research ARS-500 sub but the price was a little out of my league and AR is nowhere to be found in Ottawa. So I looked at other promising brands such as JBL, Boston Acoustics, Velodyne, Bob Carver, and Cerwin. In terms of bang for buck the HT-S15A is definitely the best. Granted the subwoofer doesn't like frequencies above 90hz when the volume is turned to full but what can you expect from a sub in this price range. It's range at regular listening levels is exemplary.
Playing with the Cerwin Vega port with a piece of paper lol. All CLS Series Speaker. All XLS Series SpeakersAll XLS Series Subwoofers. Info SheetManual. CXA Amplifiers.
It has really deep bass, I'd be willing to bet lower than the 42hz indicated on the crossover nob. The only complaint I have is at high amplification the subs back panel rattles. It's probably just a loose screw but none the less it can get quite annoying. In the next 6 months or so i hope to purchase a 200 watt center channel, and two 400 watt towers and possibly upgrade my receiver to the Denon AVR-5803 receiver to better handle the massive amounts of power required by the other four units.

I purchased Cerwin Vega because I had some older Cerwin Vega D-9's that I am using for my front speakers and thought this would match with them nicely. I purchased it having never heard it in the store.
I guessed correctly as it does round out my system very nicely and for the price, I couldn't be happier. The dimension it adds to movies like The Matrix, Independence Day, Saving Private Ryan and others is truly amazing.
The tank scene in Saving Private Ryan makes you believe the tanks will come right in the room with you. My only complaint is that the level that sounds good for home theater is not the same as when you are playing music. The volume control must be accessed and turned down a notch to blend in with the other speakers and not sound boomy or overdriven. But, once the volume matches the other speakers, it blends in seamlessly and has added a dimension to my music enjoyment in our home. I must admit to being a little bit of a Bass enthusiast and this sub fills the bill nicely.

I used to have a car that had a huge sound Alpine system in it that had enough bass from the dedicated subs and amps to crack the windshield so I'm a little jaded. Most home systems won't reproduce those levels of bass but this comes close. I highly recommend this sub. The mating receiver is the Wonderful Sony STR-777ES.
I am totally impressed with it too, but that's another review. I purchased this sub to finish out my home theater system. I love this thing and all of Cerwin Vega's products. I have this paired with a pair of RE 30's. What a great combination, turn down the adjustable crossover and let the sub pick up the really low stuff and let the 12's in the RE 30's do the rest. Great for stereo and HT. Combined with with a set of floor standing Vega's for the front and some smaller surrounding and the center channel speaker you have an unbeatable HT system for the amount spent. I have listened to much more expensive systems in the high end stores and have to say that I think the cerwin vegas out perform a great majority of them.
Bottom line, plenty power and enough bass to shake your neighborhood to the ground. I love this thing and all of Cerwin Vega's products. I have this paired with a pair of RE 30's. Bottom line, plenty power and enough bass to shake your neighborhood to the ground. I originally thought just a low priced sub would do it for me so I bought a tympani sub discounted. In less than 1 month the amp then the sub itself blew. The bass was ok but the long term quality was questionable.
Went searching for a good name brand sub, reasonably priced. I came upon this site and read the overall very good reviews.
I ordered one. I use the sub 99% of the time for movies. It blows the other sub away at only a third of the volume! I am very impressed with that. The problem lies in a 'chirp-squeak' noise coming from the ports at certain frequencies. Its getting to the point where it is annoying me.
If you have any tips on how to solve this or at least minimize this please email me [email protected] I would appreciate it. Overall, build quality and reliability, if it didnt have the 'noise' then it is definately a five star product.
